summer skin care

It’s coming up to the time of year that so many of us have been waiting for!

Summer is the time to bare our skin and bathe in the beauty of the sun’s warmth. The thought of summer approaching has us dreaming about flip-flops, bathing suits, warm water, walking on the beach, and getting bronzed and glowy skin.

However, the summer months are also a danger zone for our skin with harsh UV rays, heat, and humidity all taking a toll on our complexions. The summer sun can cause problems for all skin types if we don’t take preventive measures to protect our skin.

It’s not just heat-induced oily skin and breakouts we need to worry about either! Taking into account that exposure to the sun causes most of the wrinkles and age spots on our faces, we really need to up our summertime skin care game as the season approaches.

Of course, sun exposure isn’t necessarily a bad thing, as sunlight is a key source of vitamin D. However, too much sun can have aging effects on our skin and that's not what we want! So why does the sun make our skin age so quickly? And what can we do about it?

We’re here with this article to tell you exactly what happens to your skin in the summertime, and to share our top 8 summer skin care tips that will help you achieve a healthy glow!

What Happens To Your Skin In The Summer?

While you might be looking forward to getting a nice bronze tan, you have to consider the negative impacts that the sun has on your skin before you step out the door.

The sun emits two types of UV rays – UVA and UVB – both of which can wreak havoc on your skin:

  • UVA rays – UVA radiation penetrates the skin more deeply than UVB radiation. In fact, UVA radiation leads to a higher rate of collagen breakdown in the dermis than chronological aging.
  • UVB rays – UVB rays are responsible for sunburn, and they can lead to deadly forms of skin cancer.

Exposure to both UVA and UVB radiation from the sun can lead to premature aging over time, by causing a process known as collagen degradation.

Collagen Degradation

The dermis is the middle layer of the skin, between the skin’s deepest fatty tissue and the epidermis (the surface layer of the skin). The dermis consists of a thick mesh of collagen fibers and plays a crucial role in maintaining the skin’s proper functioning and appearance.

Collagen is a fibrous protein containing essential amino acids. It is responsible for maintaining the skin’s firmness, suppleness, thickness, and elasticity. Without it, our skin would sag and lose structure completely.

The sun damages our dermis in a three-step process:

  1. First, the sun’s UVA and UVB rays lead to the accumulation of abnormal elastin.
  2. Enzymes called metalloproteinases are produced in large quantities when this abnormal elastin accumulates.
  3. These metalloproteinases break down collagen fibers, which leads to the formation of solar scars, where skin cells haven’t been replaced or repaired.

When collagen in the dermis breaks down, signs of premature aging start to develop.

Accumulative solar scars lead to visible skin damage and wrinkling skin. UV radiation also creates free radicals, which activate the metalloproteinases that cause collagen breakdown, accelerating skin aging and the formation of fine lines, wrinkles, and age spots. So if you were ever wondering why you even need to wear sunscreen with a high SPF every day, there's your answer!

Our Top 8 Tips For Your Summer Skin Care Routine (Skin Care Tips)

Now that we understand the dangers of overexposure to the sun’s rays, let’s take a look at how you can keep your skin safe from harm and maintain that youthful glow.

1. Cover Up

The most important summer skin care tip is to cover up and protect your skin from sunlight.

A study recently found that one woman at age 40 who protected her skin from the sun actually had the skin of a 30-year-old. Of course, we don’t expect you to be covered head-to-toe or stay indoors all the time, but that 10-year skin age difference speaks for itself.1

If you don't wish to cover up all the time, then try to stay in the shade and avoid the hottest hours of sunlight between 10am and 2pm.

Covering up doesn’t have to be boring either, you can always find a chic wide-brimmed hat, scarf, and sunglasses for sun protection. It’s always possible to keep your skin safe and look good while you’re at it, too!

2. Apply High-Quality Sunscreen Religiously

The best summer skin care routine needs proper sun protection with a high-quality sunscreen and a serious commitment to apply it regularly.

Choose a sunscreen that offers UVA and UVB protection and has an SPF 30 or higher for your body, and aim for SPF 50 for your face on particularly sunny days. Always apply carefully to all exposed areas of skin on your face and body around 30 minutes before you leave the house, and make sure you remember to re-apply every two hours throughout the day. Take care to protect your lips from damage too with an SPF lip balm, which you will also need to apply every two hours during summer.

However, watch out for sunscreen products that failed to meet SPF claims. According to CNN, researchers at Consumer Reports independently evaluated the Sun Protection Factor value of 65 sunscreen products – including lotions, sprays, and sticks – and found that 43% of them had less SPF than the label promised. So some sunscreens may make claims to having SPF 30, but in reality, they may be lower. If in doubt, level up and apply a higher SPF than you think you will need.2

You can determine whether sunscreen offers good broad-spectrum protection by checking whether it contains sulisobenzone, titanium oxide, zinc oxide, avobenzone, cinnamates, salicylates, and benzophenones. Sunscreen that doesn’t contain these agents may only filter UVB light. UVB light is responsible for skin cancer and sunburn, but UVA light can also lead to the development of skin cancer and cause premature aging.

In addition, be sure that the sunscreen you select is water-resistant so that it cannot be easily removed by sweat or a dip in the pool!

3. Hydrate

To combat dehydration caused by summer heat, be sure to drink plenty of water – at least 8 glasses of water per day are needed to keep your body healthy and hydrated.

Even though this heat of summer can also make your skin feel greasy or oily, don’t mistake this for a moment to skip using your moisturizer! During the summer months your skin will also be crying out for extra hydration, as heat and humidity can have harsh drying effects on even the oiliest skin types.

If your skin gets greasy during summertime, try using an oil-free or gel-based moisturizing product. It’s important to look for a moisturizer with a humectant, which is a substance that attracts and retains water to give your skin an extra moisture boost.

One of the very best hydrating humectants to look out for in your summer skin care products is hyaluronic acid (HA), which is a natural moisturizer that can retain up to 1000 times its weight in water.

Hydrate From Within With A Moisture-Boosting Supplement

Did you know you can go one step further than a moisturizer and hydrate your skin from the inside out?

Our Taut Hydrate supplement allows you to do just that, working to combat dry skin and wrinkles on your face and body. These super-moisturizing capsules are the best hyaluronic acid supplements Renewskin Co has to offer.

Taut Hydrate combines plant-derived, 99% pure hyaluronic acid with the antioxidant powers of grape seed extract to fill, hydrate and plump up your skin from within, where a moisturizer or filler may not penetrate. It’s the perfect addition to your summer skincare routine, helping you to hydrate and combat the signs of aging from within without the need to apply a heavy or greasy moisturizer.

4. Lighten Up Your Skin Care Routine

In the hot weather, you might start to feel your skincare products clogging your pores, and your skin can feel heavy or greasy. Thanks to heat, humidity, and sweat, your winter skincare products might not stand the test of warmer months.

In summer, switch up your moisturizer and look for oil-free and non-comedogenic products. Non-comedogenic is simply the scientific way of saying that a product won’t clog your pores!

Skin serums are a great option for combatting dry skin in summer, as they can provide a potent dose of active ingredients alongside lightweight moisturizing properties. Serums generally contain a potent concentration of active ingredients, so you can protect and hydrate your skin without using much product at all.

In the morning, a light antioxidant serum is the perfect base layer for your SPF lotion or BB cream, allowing you to skip the heavier moisturizer that you might typically use in winter. The best serums for summer will contain antioxidants, which can shield your skin from the sun, reduce hyperpigmentation and blemishes, and heal scars and sun damage.

5. Exfoliate

If you want healthy, radiant skin this summer, exfoliation is essential to your skincare routine!

Exfoliate your skin once or twice a week if you have dry skin and three to four times a week if you have oily skin. Exfoliation helps shed dead skin buildup and stimulates new collagen production. This leaves the skin looking much softer and brighter.

Look out for ingredients like salicylic acid, glycolic acid, mandelic acid, and lactic acid, all of which have exfoliating properties. If you have a sensitive skin type, take care to patch test these ingredients before using them on your face, as these acids (particularly salicylic acid) can be harsh on the skin.

If you’re looking for an extra radiance boost, you can also visit your dermatologist and get a chemical peel or a laser resurfacing treatment.

5. Repair & Soothe

Even if you follow all of the summer tips for skin, sometimes you just can’t avoid a sunburn! Maybe you were using a low-quality SPF, you forgot to reapply, or it got washed away by water or sweat. Whatever the reason may be, a sunburn is never welcome.

When you experience the irritation, pain, and redness that comes with too much sun exposure, make sure you stock up on soothing aftersun products that you can use in the evenings to minimize the damage. Ingredients like aloe vera, coconut oil, and oats can all heal and soothe a sunburn. Antioxidants and rich moisturizing ingredients can also help to heal your skin and minimize the dryness and flaking associated with sunburn.

Repair Your Complexion With A Soothing Sheet Mask

Why not refresh after a long day in the sun with Taut Collagen Mask, a deeply nourishing 15-minute treatment that will make you feel like the spa has come to your home!

You can soothe the irritation of sunburn and target the signs of aging on your face with this rich topical solution. Our luxurious Taut Collagen Mask tones, brightens, and hydrates your skin while protecting it from the harmful effects of the sun.

Taut Collagen Mask packs a punch, delivering essential nutrients like collagen peptides, vitamin C, and hyaluronic acid directly to your skin. Regular use of a collagen mask offers the skin and its collagen significant protection from sun damage when used in conjunction with SPF sunscreen.

Over time, regular use of our collagen mask may even reduce the size of your pores and diminish the appearance of wrinkles. For the best results, apply the collagen mask two to three times per week.

6. Use Vitamin C

The benefits of vitamin C for skin are endless, most especially in the summer months!

Vitamin C plays an important role in maintaining healthy skin and it aids in the production of collagen. Exposure to UV light, pollutants, and cigarette smoke exacerbates its decline and contributes to premature aging.

The good news is that you can get plenty of vitamin C through both your diet and your skincare. Eat plenty of citrus fruits, bell peppers, strawberries, and broccoli to boost your intake, and look out for skin serums or face masks that contain this skin-loving antioxidant.

While vitamin C cannot replace your sun protection factor (SPF), it can be used in conjunction with sunscreen to protect against and potentially repair UV damage, such as fine lines and discoloration.

7. Nourish From Within With Antioxidant Foods & Supplements

Antioxidants are essential ingredients in any good skin care for summer, as they work to keep your skin safe from the sun while also brightening and nourishing your complexion.

Dr. Michael Prager of the British Association of Cosmetic Doctors says that antioxidants are extremely important for reversing UV damage to our DNA, which in turn may reduce hyperpigmentation and minimize the risk of skin cancer.3

How Antioxidants Work

A study by Penn State University says that free radicals damage body tissues (including collagen and elastin) by stealing electrons from the atoms that constitute the tissues. Antioxidants may combat this because they provide these free radicals with electrons, protecting body tissues from free radical damage.4

The best way to boost our skin’s sun protection in the summertime is to include a range of antioxidants in our diets.

When we eat foods that are high in antioxidants, they work their way to our bloodstream through our digestive system, where they can get to work on deactivating free radicals that would have otherwise damaged our collagen and elastin.5

A study by the Universities of Newcastle and Manchester says that tomatoes, which are rich in antioxidants and lycopene, may prove to be a weapon against sun damage. When 20 people were given 5 tbsp of tomato paste every day for 12 weeks while they were exposed to ultraviolet light, there were significant improvements in their skin's ability to protect itself.6

Boost Your Defenses With The Very Best Antioxidant Supplement for Skin Health

One especially potent antioxidant that has been clinically tested is O.P.C. (Oligomeric Proanthocyanidin Compounds), which is extracted from the bark of the French maritime pine tree and grape seeds.

Our French Pine Bark OPC supplement uses Dr. Masquelier's patented and clinically proven formula to provide your skin and body with antioxidant, anti-bacterial, anti-viral, anti-aging, anti-inflammatory, and anti-allergic protection.

OPC is one of the most clinically studied compounds due to its powerful antioxidant properties. It is 50 times more powerful than vitamin E and 20 times more powerful than vitamin C. OPC protects and repairs cells from the damage caused by free radicals. Supplementing with OPC has been proven to increase skin hydration, elasticity, and smoothness while combating collagen degradation and wrinkles.

8. Replenish Your Skin’s Collagen

With all of the damage the sun can do to our natural collagen supplies, it only makes sense that we do what we can to support and replenish our collagen.

While you will often find night creams that contain a collagen peptide content, these kinds of topical solutions may not be effective at getting the much-needed collagen deep into your dermis. The most effective way to boost your body’s collagen supplies is from within, with hydrolyzed collagen drinks that can deliver the peptides where they are needed most.

Hydrolyzed collagen has been shown to delay or minimize the effects of skin aging. Clinical studies show that ingesting a collagen drink that contains at least 10,000mg hydrolyzed collagen peptides every day may help to increase skin collagen density, boost hydration, and reduce wrinkles.7
