Learn how to pick out the best collagen supplement that works for your skin and avoid the duds.

How to choose the right collagen supplement

A protein found in connective tissues of our body, collagen gives our skin support and elasticity while keeping it supple and firm.  Our body naturally produces the collagen it needs but production starts to decline as we age. This decline also results in our skin aging, causing fine lines, wrinkles, and skin losing firmness and elasticity.

The concept of ingesting collagen supplements  to promote firmer, youthful skin originates from Japan and its now catching the attention of celebrities and beauty editors in the US and Europe. No wonder collagen supplements that promise beautiful, youthful skin are now the fastest growing anti-aging product category. As a result, there are many collagen brands and types to choose from-- but not all collagen beauty supplements are created equal.

Here are 7 tips for buying the best quality, most effective collagen beauty supplement that will benefit your skin, and help visibly reduce fine lines and wrinkles.

1. TYPE OF COLLAGEN

There are 28 types of collagen in the body. Type 1 Collagen is the most abundant in our body and stronger than steel by weight. It makes up 80% of the dermis layer of our skin. Hence, Type I collagen is considered to be the key building matrix protein which gives our skin its structure and firmness.

Type II collagen makes up movable joints, so it is commonly used to treat joint aging and relieve pain associated with arthritis.

Type III collagen is the second most abundant collagen in human tissue. Babies and children have a lot of type III collagen, which is why their skin is so soft and plump. As we age, type III collagen is gradually replaced by type I collagen.

Look for a collagen supplement that contain at least 90% type I collagen if you want the collagen supplement to work for your skin.

2. HYDROLYZED COLLAGEN VS AMINO ACIDS AND BIOAVAILABILITY

The problem with collagen molecules is that in its native state they are simply too large for our body to absorb efficiently unless they’ve been hydrolyzed.

Hydrolyzed collagen  is a processed form of collagen that is obtained when collagen fibers are broken down into small collagen chains also known as "collagen peptides" through a process known as "Hydrolysis" .

This technology was invented and patented by a Japanese company. Rather than providing amino acids that have to be broken down and then reassembled into collagen, hydrolyzed collagen is able to efficiently deliver small, usable collagen peptides into our body. Clinical studies show these collagen peptides get absorbed in the bloodstream, penetrate and remain in the dermis, and trigger collagen production in the skin. See Clinical Studies.

There are many products and brands that claim their collagen supplement or collagen builder contains collagen or hydrolyzed collagen, especially the less expansive products. Typically they do not contain any hydrolyzed collagen or collagen peptides. Instead they are predominantly made up of  3 amino acids   Glycine, Proline, and Hydroxyproline   , which together represent about 50% of total amino acid content of the collagen helix chain.  You need up to 18 different amino acids in the right quantities and ratio to create a collagen molecule.    These products also lack other minor but important amino acids necessary to construct a complete collagen molecule helix chain.

By comparison, a Collagen supplement that contains "Hydrolyzed Collagen" is more effective  because it contains a complete amino acid sequence as a collagen peptide which  can be absorbed and transported to the dermis of the skin.

If you want a true collagen supplement that works for your skin, look for one that contains Type 1 Hydrolyzed Collagen with High Bioavailability.

Taut Premium Collagen Drink  contains 90% Type 1 hydrolyzed collagen in liquid form that has the optimal molecular weight profile and a impressive bioavailability of 90-95%.

3. CONCENTRATION and POTENCY

There are many clinical studies that confirm ingesting a high concentration of  hydrolyzed collagen helps to increase skin thickness and reduce wrinkles. Many of these studies were based on consumption of 10,000mg hydrolyzed collagen per day over a period of either 6-8 weeks.

The high dose of collagen triggers our body's  wound repair response  - a process that identifies and repairs damaged collagen in the dermis by stimulating the growth of new collagen. Ingesting high potency collagen supplements  can stimulate the production of skin collagen and smooth out fine lines and wrinkles.

Taut Premium Collagen Supplement Drink contains 13,000mg  hydrolyzed type I marine collagen per 1.7oz serving, the highest concentration of hydrolyzed collagen per serving currently available and almost 2-6 times the concentration of other brands.

The following graph shows the ultrasound images of a 60 year-old woman’s face after drinking one bottle of Taut Collagen every night for the first eight nights, and then every other night during an 8-week clinical study.

You can see below that after 8 weeks,  her skin appears smoother with denser collagen structure (the yellowish orange areas) than before drinking Taut  Collagen Supplement.

If you are taking a collagen supplement to help with your aging skin, make sure to pay attention to the concentration of hydrolyzed collagen per serving (minimum 10,000mg) if you want to see visible results. For younger adults or for maintenance, a lower daily concentration between 2,500mg - 5,000mg is typically sufficient.
4. FORMULATION and INGREDIENTS
Our dermis is made up of more than 80% Type I collagen and 15% Type III Collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid . Together these 3  are the key components for the extracellular matrix which gives our skin its structure, elasticity and firmness.

Taking collagen on its own will have  positive effects, but the most powerful benefits lie in consuming a beauty supplement that contain a synergistic formulation of these 3 Key components with other anti-aging ingredients designed to support firmer, smoother, younger skin.

In addition to hydrolyzed marine collagen, key active ingredients in the LAC Taut Premium Collagen Supplement Drink are vitamin C, hyaluronic acid, deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA), coenzyme CoQ10, ceramide, and chondroitin sulfate. These complementary ingredients maximize the absorption of collagen as well as provide powerful and effective anti-aging benefits: reduce fine lines and wrinkles, increase hydration and firmness.

Hyaluronic acid
-
Hyaluronic acid is a form of sugar molecule naturally produced in our body that maintains the skin’s ability to retain water. Hyaluronic acid makes our skin look plump and hydrated, but hyaluronic acid levels in our body decrease as we age.

Chondroitin sulfate protein complex-
Functioning much like Elastin, this compound plays an important role in giving our skin the flexibility to stretch and spring back, provide tissue lubrication and aid in transferring various nutrients between the cells.

Vitamin C
 - Vitamin C plays an essential role in the synthesis of collagen. A study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition showed that higher vitamin C intakes were associated with lower likelihood of a wrinkled appearance.

CoQ10 - CoQ10 is an enzyme that is present in every cell of our bodies. It is a potent antioxidant that fights free radical damage and the signs of aging skin. Our ability to produce CoQ10 diminishes with age, and research has shown that consuming beauty drinks is more effective at increasing CoQ10 levels in our skin than applying topical applications.

DNA - It is theorized that DNA, an important source of nutrients in our bodies, works together with hydrolyzed collagen to form new fibroblasts in the dermis layer of the skin. Fibroblasts are specialized cells responsible for growing new collagen.

Ceramide- Ceramide is a waxy lipid molecule that is key to the health of the epidermis, which protects underlying layers of the skin and attracts and retains moisture.

5. TYPE OF SUGAR and PRESERVATIVES

Collagen Supplements come in many different forms. Powders, Pills and Drinks are the most common and available in the market. Hydrolyzed Collagen on its own can have a strong after-taste, which is why sugar, sweetener or juice is often used in the formulation. Therefore it is important to pay attention to the type of sugar in the ingredients of the collagen supplement you will be taking every day.

Many collagen brands use fructose or high fructose corn syrup. Sometimes these are the second or third ingredient because they are the cheapest source of sugar, or they are hidden and not disclosed unless you look for it.

Also watch out for artificial sugars , like Aspartame and Sucralose that can also cause long term health issues.  These  common artificial sugar are used to provide  sweetness without the calories. According to a recent research review published in the  Journal of Toxicology and Environmental  Health , Critical Reviews,  Sucralose has been found to cause a variety of harmful biological effects in the body.

So what is considered a good, healthy sugar?  According to health officials, the best type of sugar is natural, plant based, with a low glycemic index:  palm sugar, coconut sugar, raw honey, molasses and stevia.

If you are going to be taking a collagen supplement daily to help with your skin, you will do your skin and body justice by taking one that contains healthy form of sugar and no preservatives.

Taut Premium Collagen Drink is made with real orange juice, sweetened with Stevia and contains no preservatives.
6. SOURCE OF COLLAGEN

The four main sources of hydrolyzed collagen found in supplements are bovine (cow), porcine (pig), chicken, and marine (fish) collagen.

Marine collagen extracted from fish is the purest and safest form of collagen. Our body's cells easily absorb marine-derived collagen and use it to keep the skin tight and wrinkle free. While harvesting collagen from marine sources is more costly, it produces a much more pure collagen, especially in comparison to cheaper bovine and porcine collagen sourced from the byproducts of slaughterhouses. Marine collagen that is extracted from cold water fish has up to 1.5 times more bioavailability than bovine or porcine collagen.

Beware of collagen supplements made in China and other countries with loose manufacturing controls and standards.

Taut Collagen is sourced from red snapper, a deep-water fish wild caught in the  Indian Ocean and processed in Japan using environmentally friendly production that is ISO-9001 certified, which guarantees the highest degree of purity and effectiveness.  Taut Premium Collagen supplement drink is   Chemical-Free,  Allergen Free and BSE-TSE Free.  It contains no porcine, bovine or chicken collagen.

7. PILLS, POWDER OR DRINK?  WHICH IS BEST?

The bioavailability  of a collagen supplement, or the percentage of the substance that is actually absorbed into your body when ingested, is another critical factor to consider when evaluating collagen supplements.

Bioavailability largely determines the efficacy of any nutrient you ingest. Nutrients that are highly bioavailable can be digested and absorbed at a high percentage. When nutrients are in liquid form, they provide the highest possible absorption rate of nutrients into the body because they are already essentially pre-digested. Tablets or powders cannot match the level of absorption that liquid collagen supplements offer.

In addition, each table has very little collagen so you would need to take at least 10-20 large tablets to reach the same level of essential nutrients and collagen peptides to achieve the desired visible results. Collagen tablets are also more difficult to ingest and assimilate into the body and are only partially absorbed.

As for collagen powder, you would need to mix with water or juice. Collagen powder that contains hydrolyzed collagen made from Bovine can have a strong taste and needs to be sweetened.

In conclusion, we prefer drinks over pills and powder because it is convenient and more effective. There are fewer companies that produce Collagen in liquid form and they are pricer than pills and powder.

Taut Premium Collagen Drink is packed and sealed in small 1.7oz glass bottle to guarantee maximum efficacy and freshness.

We all live for the summer months! Nothing is better than going to the lake, beach, or hanging out at the pool with your family and friends on a long, hot summer day. While this is therapeutic to the mind and spirit, it may not always be so great for your skin. And we all know that we’re supposed to wear sunscreen on the regular to help protect our skin from the sun’s damaging rays, but maintaining coverage and reapplying sunscreen is sometimes a task that escapes us while we are having fun. Unconsciously, we may end up with a sunburn, which is a clear indicator of immediate skin damage. This damage accumulates over time, and accelerates the skin aging in all of us, resulting in dark/sun spots (hyperpigmentation), and contributes to other subcutaneous skin structure breakdown that leads to lines, wrinkles, and sagging skin. Which is a major bummer for our beauty goals.

Aging is kind of a bummer, am I right?

Even though our mothers gave us the heads-up that things are going to change, we then wake up one morning (approx. age 35 for me) and realize that 1) Things HAVE changed, along with 2) Mom was right…AGAIN . And unfortunately, our skin is usually where we see the effects of aging in our bodies first. From dryness, to volume loss and fine lines, to perhaps even the oh-so-unfair adult onset acne, time has a way of wreaking havoc on our once pristine skin.

But the great news is, we can reduce these effects by nourishing our skin from the inside, out. And as a registered dietitian, I’m here to provide a few proven nutrition tips and real-life tricks, to nourish your skin to help keep it glowing and healthy for years to come.

Protecting your skin from the sun is important, no matter what time of year it is, but it’s especially vital in the summertime. While you might want to bare your skin in the summer to achieve a beautiful, sun-kissed complexion, UVA and UVB radiation from the sun can wreak havoc on your skin and cause premature aging if you aren’t careful.

UVA rays, which account for 90 to 95 percent of the UV radiation that reaches the earth, penetrate deep layers of the skin and cause tanning. UVB radiation accounts for only 5 to 10 percent of solar radiation, but it damages the epidermis, or surface layer of the skin, causing sunburn.

UVA rays cause the collagen in your skin to break down at a higher rate than normal aging . They do this by penetrating the dermis, or middle layer of the skin, and lead to the abnormal buildup of elastin. This elastin accumulates and results in the production of enzymes that break down collagen.

The more sun exposure you get, the worse the damage becomes. UV radiation also creates free radicals, which are unstable oxygen molecules that increase the number of enzymes that break down collagen. An excessive amount of free radicals in your body can also weaken your vascular system, cause poor circulation, and lead to deteriorated eye health.
